Mahendras. have tied up with Days INN and offer a four semester diploma in hotel
management affiliated to the American Hotel Management Education Institute and
the University of Virginia.
Apart from the above recognised courses many more
Institutes for Hotel Management are opening up thus bridging the gap between
demand and supply.
After graduation, executive - training programs are
offered by a number of Five Star Hotels like Oberoi, Taj, Meridien, Asian
Hotels. The Oberoi School of Hotel Management set up in 1996 offers a
three-year management programme for graduates or diploma holders in hotel
management.
There are five seats and the selected executive
trainees get a stipend of Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000 a month. The school is
recognised by the International Hotel Accociation of Paris. The India Tourism
Development Corporation selects 55 management trainees every year. Hotel Management
trainees generally get a stipend and have to execute a bond to serve the hotel
for a given period. These hotels look out for “bright young people with
pleasant outgoing personalities and a natural flair for hospitality.” In
addition, you should be a graduate, in your early twenties and fluent in
English. Working knowledge of a foreign language is definitely an asset.
Apart from training opportunities in India which
undoubtedly meet with international standards you can also seek admission to
Hotel Management Institutes abroad. Schools in Austria, Switzerland, France,
Germany and England and US particularly the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University are the best and
recognised worldwide. The courses are of one to three years duration. Information
regarding these courses is available at the concerned Embassy/High Commission.
If you study in Europe, it is essential to be fluent in the language spoken in
the country. Les Roches in Switzerland which is managed by the Swiss Hotel
Association conducts the course in English.

To be classified as commercial pilot, one has to
obtain a Student Pilot Licence (SPL) followed by a Private Pilot Licence (PLL)
and Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).
Student Pilot Licence (SPL)
The examination for the student Pilot Licence is
conducted at the various flying clubs sponsored by the government. The minimum
age and qualifications prescribed are 16 yrs and Class XII respectively. The
examination comprises papers on - Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorology, Air
navigation and Technical Aspects. After passing the exam you have to get a
medical fitness certificate. On getting the SPL, you are eligible for practical
flying training. Initially, you are accompanied by the flying instructor and
after about 15 hours of dual flying you can have your first solo flight.
Private Pilot Licence (PLL)
To be eligible for PPL examination you must log a
total of 60 hours of flying with a minimum of 20 hours solo and 5 hours cross
country flying. Subsidised rates are charged for the first 60 hours of flying
(by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation at all government flying clubs).
NCC air cadets are entitled to 60 hours of cost free flying as flight training
is part of the three year curriculum of NCC which runs parallel to
undergraduate studies. The written examination covers the following subjects -
Air regulation, Aviation meteorology, Air Navigation, Air craft Engines and
Seamanship.
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
You can get the CPL by continuing your flying training
at any flying club in India, the Indira Gandhi Rashtra Uran Academy or a flying
school in USA / Europe. The required educational qualification is Class XII
with Physics and Maths. However, non science students who started flying before
January, 1994 are also eligible. You must have a total 250 hours of flying.The
written examination for the CPL comprises the following subjects - Air
Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Technical and Planning.
Examinations are held every two months in Delhi. Medical clearance either from
the Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi or Institute of
Aviation Medicine (IAM), Bangalore, is mandatory.
Senior Commerical Pilot Licence (SCPL)
Following your CPL, an additional 500 hours of flying
experience leads to the Senior Commerical Pilot Licence (SCPL). On completing a
total of 1500 hours of flight experience you are eligible for the Airline
Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). This qualifies you to command sophisticated
commercial aircrafts.

Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi Faizabad, Guwahati, Hissar, Hyderabad, Jaipur,

Patiala and Patna.
The Indian Aviation Academy C/o St. Joseph High School, 54 Pushpa Park, P.O. Bose,
27690, Malad (East), Mumbai - 400097 also prepares you for the CPL examination
conducted by the government.
The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udan Academy (under the Ministry of Civil Aviation), Fursatganj,
(IGRUA), Rai Bareilly, UP is the only institute in the country training
commercial pilots with assured jobs in national carriers.
The CPL course (18 months duration) is announced in
March. The test is conducted in April and the session commences in July every
yr.
There are about twenty seats.
Selection is through a competitive examination
comprising aviation subjects of the PPL level and a reasoning test. Shortlisted
candidates undergo a pilot aptitude test which is followed by the interview.
The training for CPL is expensive and costs around 4
lakhs (Rs. 2 lakhs for SC/ST candidates). Though training abroad is a quicker
process (6-8 months), it costs about Rs. 6 lakhs.

Pilot’s training never stops throughout your flying
career. You will need to re-train in order to add new types of rating to your
licences when new aircraft are introduced. You should also take frequent
refresher courses.
