Joining the Army as a Commissioned Officer for adventurous and secured life with attractive pay and perks.

Armed forces serves the nation both in times of war as well as in peace, protecting the national security from external threats and ensuring the internal security and stability.

 

Army constitutes ‘Fighting Forces’ and ‘Support Services’.

 

Fighting Forces consist of Corps of Armed, Artillery, Signals, Engineers and Infantry or Mechanized Infantry.

Armoured Corps: They are specializing in tank operations and destroy enemy positions with the help of tanks. They also operate tanks and amphibious assault vehicles in combat or scouting missions. When the infantry has difficult and dangerous missions to perform, they were called upon for special operations.

Artillery: Artillery defends vulnerable targets like Airfields, Dams, Bridges and Nuclear Installations from enemy attack by the means of air defence systems. They provide support by bringing down heavy fire on enemy positions with field guns and tactical missiles etc. They also drop troops behind enemy lines and supply arms and ammunition to troops.

Signals: They operate and maintain communication links, during war and peace times. During war, they keep pace with moving columns and provide communication links.

Engineers: They are specialized in rapid movement in building Roads, Bridges, Airfields and destroying enemy bridges, putting obstacles for enemy movement, laying mine fields for their defence and destroying enemy minefields.

Infantry/Mechanized Infantry: About, one fourth of the total manpower of army consists of soldiers, who are trained and equipped to fight on grounds. They capture enemy territory during wartime. The Mechanized Infantry equipped with Armoured Personnel Carriers and other Vehicles.

 

Support Services render their support in terms of medical, clothing, transportation, ration supply, ammunition, equipment.

Army Service Corps: It operates the mobility of troops, vehicles a_Ìnd ammunitions. They provide all the materials required by the army, such as bulk transport convoys and ammunition stocks, replenishments during war, rations and clothing for the troops etc. The cops also handle postal services in forward areas.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME): They are responsible for the maintenance and servicing of all vehicles and equipments including guns, radars, helicopters etc. They also fabricate technical items. For this branch army recruits engineers in its officer’s cadre and trains them according to its requirement.

Army Ordinance Corps: Responsibilities of procurement, storage, maintenance and issue of all types of hardware, i.e. equipment, spares, ammunition, clothing etc. are the prime area of work.

Army Medical Corps: Army Medical Corps is the division of medical corps, which provides medical care to the personnel of all the three branches of the armed force as well as their family members. They manage the hospitals, clinics and MI Rooms. They also commissioned Dental Surgeons.

Nursing Officers: Nursing Staff takes care of patients whilst helping to manage a ward.  They nurse service personnel and their families.

Intelligence Corps: Specialized in Signal Intelligence, Photographic Interpretation, Decoding of Messages and provides information about defence matters.

Education Corps: Educates troops so that they can keep pace with the latest advancement in Weapon Technology, Electronics, Tactical Logistic etc.

Army Postal Services: They look after the postal needs of Army, their men and families. All types of mail, parcels, money orders etc are sent from or to forward areas through this service.

Judge Advocate General: Personnel in this services have legal background (Law Graduates) and deal with all matters related to law like disciplinary cases and court–martials etc. They also give legal advice to staff.

Remount Veterinary Corps: They runs and maintain dairy and agricultural farms. Animals like horses and mules are required for carrying heavy arms and ammunition on high altitudes terrains. Trained dogs are also kept for trekking enemy spies. Breeding and care of all such animals is the responsibility of the Remount Veterinary Corps.

 

Administrative Officer

Administrative Officers plays a key role in the smooth functioning of the Armed Forces of both discipline i.e. Combat Forces or Support Services. Administrative aspects include planning of leave, man management, training and documentation relating to troops or organization, timely supplies of ration, clothing, arms and ammunition are the prime areas of responsibilities. They are specialized in handling of various types of sophisticated weapons. During war, they are professionally ready to lead the troops and face enemy tactfully.

Dairy Officer

Dairy Officer plays a key role in the smooth functioning of the Armed Forces as being in the Support Services. His division runs and maintains the Dairy Farms and Agricultural Farms. Animals like Cows, buffaloes are required for providing milk for the troops and horses and mules for carrying heavy arms and ammunition on higher altitudes, terrains. Dairy officer, thus, has a great responsibility for maintaining Military Farms and ensures better quality milk products for use of the troops.

Education Officer

Education officers are responsible to teach troops so that they can keep pace with the advancement in new technology, weapon systems, electronics and computerization etc. They too are specialized to handle small arms during war time and look into the administrative duties.

Fighting Officer

Fighting Officers are particularly concerned with operational planning.  They adopt various methods in training and mobilization of troops in operational preparedness.  Both Combat and Support Services having these officers to meet with operational requirement during war time. They are specialized not only in handling of various types of sophisticated weapons but also in tactical moves and planning. They lead troops during war and training exercises.  They are also professionally sound to replace General Duty Officer and Administrative Officer.

Law Officer

The Officers working in this branch have a legal background (Law Graduates) and deal with all matters related to law like disciplinary cases, court–martials, drafting charges and conducting prosecution. They also give general legal advice to deal with civil cases and to staff. They are known as Judge Advocate General (JAG). This field is also open for women candidates.

Medical Officer

Medical Officers provide medical care for all three services personnel and their families and advice on occupational and community medicine. They manage hospitals, clinics and MI rooms. Army trains its own doctors, nursing officers and Para medical staff at Pune and other large hospitals. They also enroll doctors and dental surgeons trained in other medical colleges. They too are specialized to handle small arms to meet with any eventuality during wartime and look into the administrative duties.

Nursing Officer

The Army Medical Corps together with Army Dental Corps provide a composite, wide-spectrum, morale boosting and pride of place in protocol to the young and ambitious women to serve with the Army. Nursing Officers take care of patients whilst helping to manage a ward.  They nurse service personnel and their families. Their duties are manifold and cover a wide range of functions and responsibilities that varies with the levels of qualification and the working environment. Initial level nurses are required for the bedside care of general patients, while, at senior level, they are required to manage whole groups of people. Specialized skills are required to manage psychiatric, pediatric, intensive care patients. However, they are involved in dispensing medication, keeping records, such as hourly temperature of a patient, setting up and operating medical equipment, from syringes to drips to life support systems, administration, which includes keeping stock of drug and equipments. They are commissioned in Military Nursing Services as Lieutenant and reaches up to the rank of Brigadier.

Remount Veterinary Officer

Territorial Army Officers

The Territorial Army Officers work in the same discipline as of Regular Army Officers in their prescribed field. Territorial Army is also a part of Regular Army and its present role is to relieve the Regular Army from static duties and assist civil administration in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in situations where life of the communities is affected or the Security of the Country is threatened and to provide units for Regulars Army as and when required.

Technical Officer

A master in any prescribed field whether it is Tele communication, Engineering or Computer Technology. Always eager to exercise his expertise/skill to support or serve the troops and the organization in all types of trying situations whether in peace or war. Fields are open in Support Services for technically qualified women candidates. Technical graduate granted Short Service Commission have to undergo 10 months training at Officers Training Academy, Chennai.

If you fare well in this exam you are called in for a Services Selection Board (SSB) interview which lasts for 4 days. The Combined Defence Services Exam (CDSC) is held after every 6 months in various parts of India. If you fare well in this exam you will be called in for a Services Selection Board (SSB) interview which lasts for 3-4 days. In this interview written and medical tests with outdoor activity contests and personal interviews are conducted. If you pass them, you are straightaway enlisted into the Indian Military Academy and get trained there for 18 months after which you get a commissioned rank.
